And we have new premises. From February we will be a new space on Airedale St (still in Auckland central).

First projects out of the way, 3 new shorts now in prep

The current intake have successfully delivered three Music Videos as their first projects of the course! With a rainy shoot weekend, and lots of overtime needed to complete the edits around scheduled classes, the three crews have done well to deliver on time and overcoming all the inevitable issues. The finished clips can be viewed here on our films page, (the first three under the Music Video tab)

While completing these Music Videos, students were also required to pitch their ideas for a three minute short film to a visiting producer, Ian John. Ian greenlit three of the pitches, which went into developement immediately, with scripts needing to be locked off by 2nd October. This week they will be hunting for locations, and holding casting sessions with actors, as well as getting their shot lists, production design elements, and call sheets ready for the shooting window which starts Friday. And all this has to be done around the scheduled classes in lighting, script writing, and paperwork! Keep your eyes out for three new short films by the 20th October, about a physcadelic job interview, a hypocritic mother, and a simple white lie :-)

May 2011 Intake has graduated!

The May 2011 course has wrapped up, hosting a screening of a selection of the films they have made during the course to guests at the NZFA last Friday night. Thier final film, “Date With Death” was well recieved, with the audience ‘laughing at all the right moments’. Later in the evening the ‘making of’ video was shown, which also went down well, and was followed by generous quantities of beverage and karaoke .

NZFA staff and tutors wish the graduates all the very best as they head out to begin achieving their goals – keep in touch and see you in the credits!

And meanwhile, a big welcome to the September 2011 intake, who are right now cracking into their first week of camera operation, today with Jason Wetzel, getting the low-down on how to tell a story through the lens.

NZFA Graduate wins Best Director award in Las Vegas

Danny Phillips, Kiwi Film-maker and Magician, and a graduate of our May 2009 intake, recently submitted a film to the Las Vegas Magic Film Festival, and has cleaned up with the ‘Best Director’ award, along with his lead actor taking away the ‘Best Actor’ gong as well! Following is Danny’s own breakdown of events:

“The email arrived from a friend. “There is a film festival in Las Vegas that you might be interested in entering. Magic Magazine Film Festival, and they are looking for entries from around the world. All entries must have a theme of magic or magicians”. I am a professional magician as well as filmmaker so how could I ignore the challenge?

“The length was to be under 6 minutes, but the problem was I had just 5 weeks to make it in. I had no story and at that point, not a hint of a decent idea. I completed the entry form and emailed it. A week later I had come up with a few half baked stories but not one I was prepared to hang my cap on.  I mused over this point. Twenty percent of available time had elapsed and I was no further ahead! Finally the gem of an idea started to take shape but it would be another five days before I had written the script and rewritten it 4 or 5 times before I was happy to proceed with it. It would be rewritten two or three more times before we shot it.

Antonio’s Secret – A time capsule is found under a home after the Christchurch earthquake. In it there is a series of predictions that turn out to be true except one. That the finder will have psychic powers. The owner is on a quest to track down the writer and finds he was a famous magician. Is the magician correct? Does the owner have psychic powers or does the magician have another agenda?

“Auditions were held only 5 days after the first advertisements appeared. Shooting was to commence a week later but I still had to pull together a crew. The pressure was on and every deadline was met. I ended up with a great cast and one of our lead actors Ken Blackburn ended up taking out the Best Actor award. The crew pulled together really well and the results were to be seen in the edited footage. I had to have the film couriered to USA and it arrived 24 hours before the deadline.

“The news we were hoping for arrived.  “Antonio’s Secret” had been accepted into the Film Festival. But better news was to come when I was later told that we were in the finals. I didn’t think anything of being invited to attend the final night and prize giving ceremony. I knew all finalists were asked to attend, however two words at the bottom of the email made me hopeful “Good film” On the basis of those two words, I booked a flight.

“Winning Best Director and taking away Best Actor awards made it all worthwhile, but at the end of the day even without them, I had a helluva time making the film.”

Congratulations Danny, looking forward to the next one!

Filming wraps on “A Date With Death”

The final short film of the May2011 course is in the can! The script has been covered successfully with no major issues arising, despite taking place over eight days, through a variety of weather, from clear blue skies to snow and sleet, at eight separate locations, and involving stunt work and the filming of eight deaths… This black romantic comedy is currently having sound synced and a rough edit assembled, and is due for delivery by Wednesday 2nd September. The students have also just set up a facebook page, keep your eyes out for the trailer! http://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Date-with-Death/149132805172829

NZFA Graduate Directs Music Video for Tiki Taane

Ian Brown, a student of the August 2010 16wk course, took up the chance to direct a music video from Tiki Taane’s latest album, ‘In The World Of Light’. Tiki approached NZFA asking for a capable student to work within the constraints of a NZ On Air funding grant, with the intention of giving a graduate a chance to add to their showreel. Tiki said “Im so happy with the outcome and I hope that other NZ musicians will also try this option for their music video… it was one of the most fun videos to make, you guys rule..!” The clip is called Light Year’s Away, and can be found on youtube

Apple Releases Latest Version of Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro X, the latest offering from Apple, is the end of an era for Final Cut Studio, and the beginning of what most are saying is a majorly dumbed down version of the edit suite that half of all professional editors use. However, despite the dropping of what we would call essential features, there are some interesting new ones that have been built into this offering. In Apple’s words, “the Magnetic Timeline, Clip Connections, and other innovative features make editing faster, more fluid, and more flexible than ever before. Final Cut Pro X makes it easy to organize and find your media, with automatic content analysis and streamlined keywording tools. New 64-bit architecture and a ColorSync-managed color pipeline let you work at blazing speeds and with extraordinary quality.” Our advice? Wait for the inevitable updates; it has a long way to go before it even comes close to surpassing FCP7.
